The School | FAQs

The Palisades Learning Center (PLC) was approved in 1977 by the New Jersey State Department of Education to provide educational services for students who are classified by their school districts as having behavioral disabilities. The school enrolls 125 high school age students from six counties and over fifty school districts in northern New Jersey. All of the students attending our school are referred by their school districts who pay the tuition and provide transportation at no cost to the family. Typically, our students enter PLC having experienced years of school failure and alienation. Therefore, it is our mission to provide an educational and therapeutic school environment designed to help our students develop the academic, social, behavioral, and life skills needed to become independent and successful.

To fulfill our mission, the Palisades Learning Center operates a transdisciplinary program that is child-centered and responsive to the requirements of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Three of the most important goals of our school are to have each student acquire academic skills and knowledge, accept responsibility for his/her own behavior, and make a confident transition to employment or post-secondary education. In order to achieve these goals, the school has four program components:

  • Instruction is designed to meet each student's academic needs for graduation and is in compliance with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.

  • Positive Behavior Support is a school-wide model that utilizes positive reinforcement and a self-esteem building approach to develop self- management skills.

  • Student Support Services are designed to provide each student with a counselor who is available to him/her on a scheduled and as-needed basis. In addition, each student participates in group counseling that focuses on current issues that effect the well being of teenagers.

  • Career Education is designed to provide each student with the means necessary to make an informed and confident transition from school to work, training, or post-secondary education.

As a "Learning Organization", the Palisades Learning Center is committed to a Strategic Planning process that insures the growth and development of the school and it's programs. We believe that within this unique and caring environment each student has the opportunity to achieve their goals and lead productive lives.
