Positive
Behavior Support integrates into a single system many
of the established practices of Applied Behavior Analysis.
In this system, multiple and diverse goals can be set and
monitored for each student in an effort to help him/her develop
the skills needed to become a responsible and independent
individual. There are three program components that work together
to keep the program balanced and responsive: the Positive
Behavior Improvement Plan, the Positive Reinforcement
System, and the Support Staff.
The Positive Behavior Improvement Plan documents the
student's behavioral goals, objectives, and intervention strategies,
per the requirements of the IEP. The student's teacher first
identifies those behaviors in need of improvement by performing
a functional assessment and reviewing historical data. From
this information, the teacher is able to determine "target"
behaviors and interventions that become the basis for the
Behavior Improvement Plan. The plan is reviewed and approved
by a supervisor and then shared with the student so that the
student knows what is expected of him/her. With our own software,
"Behavior Manager", the teacher is able to efficiently
develop, review and change the plan as needed.
The Positive Reinforcement System reinforces a student
on a daily basis for achieving his/her behavioral objectives.
This reinforcement builds self-esteem and allows the student
to keep track of his/her progress as he/she moves through
a series of "Phases" designed to measure when he/she
is a good candidate for mainstreaming.
The Support Staff are available to meet the needs
of a student who requires more individualized attention in
order to return to task. These needs can take many forms including
those that are social, behavioral, and emotional. The Support
Staff are skilled and trained at redirecting a student's focus.
