Student
Support Services at the Palisades Learning Center encompass a wide range of
counseling and case management services. They include individual counseling, group
counseling, and case management that coordinates all of the intra-school, family,
and interagency efforts being made on behalf of the student. Our licensed school
social workers, and school psychologist provide these services. - Individual
Counseling is provided for a student on the following basis:
- Scheduled - this counseling is provided at a regularly scheduled time, reflecting
the requirements of a student's IEP.
- Unscheduled - this counseling
is provided on an as needed basis upon observance by school personnel that a student
is experiencing emotional distress, or as a stopgap measure to avoid escalation
of inappropriate behavior.
- Student Requested - this counseling
is provided as a result of a request made by a student to discuss an issue that
is of concern to that student. The student can also make a request of this nature
in an effort to "settle down" if something is upsetting him or her.
- Group Counseling is provided weekly for our students
and is geared towards helping each student develop more appropriate coping techniques
around such matters as school issues, peer related issues, community life, and
family life. For a majority of our students, group counseling helps them to develop
self-control and the skills needed to react less impulsively in a social setting.
- The Student Assistance Program: Palisades Learning Center
has a commitment to the education of each of its students toward the prevention
of alcohol and substance abuse. Toward this end, the Student Assistance Program
identifies and helps at-risk students and their families choose healthy lifestyle
alternatives. One of the goals of the program is to work with students individually
and in groups, addressing those social and emotional issues that are the result
of alcohol and substance abuse.
